Non-Optimum: When it's safe to do so

Non Optimum: When It's Safe To Do So is a film, collage and artistic enquiry.

Documenting months of the Covid-19 pandemic, it reveals the lives of protagonists Alan, Jackie, Ian and Peter and the people they encounter when the vital services they are dependent on suddenly stop. Whilst disrupting the construct of ‘normality’, it extracts moments of the mundane and the surreal, centred on endless zooming, domestic dreaming and the reimagined, forbidden outdoors. Using content filmed by the protagonists and content filmed on location, this work attempts to ask more questions than it answers, illuminating the wider and more uncomfortable issues around visibility, ability and otherness. Commissioned as research into Contemporary Care in Scotland by the National Theatre of Scotland.
